The Sushrut Learning Center (SLC) successfully hosted its first Cadaver Spine Course in
December 2007, in cooperation with the D.Y Patil Medical College, Pune.
The course consisted of two modules; a minimally invasive module held on 28-29 December and a
spine stabilization module held on 29-30 December 2007. Twenty seven delegates from various
parts of India and overseas delegates from Malaysia and Nepal participated.
The minimally invasive module featured a live surgical demonstration by Dr. Satish Gore and didactic
lectures by Dr. Gore and his faculty team which included Dr. Pai-Raiturker and Dr. Pramod Lokhande.
Participants also benefited from a hands-on exposure to minimally invasive techniques on cadavers,
ably guided by the faculty team led by Dr. Gore.
The spine stabilization module faculty team was led by Dr. Ram Chaddha, leading spine surgeon
from Mumbai, ably assisted by Dr. Rajesh Parasnis and Dr. Amol Rege, both from Pune. The
stabilization module included didactic lectures but was substantially discussion and interaction
driven with a large number of case studies. The experienced participant group took enthusiastic
part in the discussions and interactions with the faculty team.
A substantial amount of course time was dedicated towards hands on work. The hands on experience
at the SLC Skills Lab was directed towards enabling familiarity with the intricacies of spinal
instrumentation while the hands-on cadaver experience helped participants gain deeper
insights into spinal anatomy. The provision of an image intensifier at the cadaver lab helped
participants verify the pedicle screw placements they achieved during the cadaver hands on workshop.
Both participants and faculty members expressed satisfaction with the arrangements made, both at
SLC as well as at D.Y Patil Medical College, the host for the cadaver workshops. SLC looks forward to
organizing more such events in the future. An event calendar will be up on the site soon. Watch
